Luang Prabang
Luang Prabang is magic. It is the first place in SE Asia where I have felt completely in awe of where I ended up. It's the first place I would return to in a heartbeat. Start planning your trip.
It's basically like French Asian fusion. Lots of French architectural stylings mixed with SE Asian food, climate, and topography. It's a surprising mix, and I love it. Since the country is basically one giant organic farm, everything has lots of delicious greens, many of which I've never even heard of before. The food feels very alive and nutrient rich. Minus the barbecued piece of delicious pork fat bacon thing I gnawed on last night. As with all other SE Asian countries, the street meat scene is heart stopping. Cuz it will literally clog your arteries and you'll die. Anyone who has ever been to a Midwest State Fair will feel like they've stumbled onto the set of Willy Wonka pork edition.
The Mekong river flows through Luang Prabang and gives it a very exotic vibe. It's a wide swirling mud trail snaking through the mountains. The water looks like it's flowing in every direction at once with a central current pulling through the middle. If there was ever a home for river monsters, this is the river.
So yeah, lots of feelings happening in Laos. General awe mixed with excitement. We feel like were actually on vacation again.
